Bravo!!!
Excellent book. My 14 month old recites it entirely!

Fun and Entertaining
This was my son's favorite book. We had to read it several times a day and he never ever tired of it. It is bright, colorful, and a lot of fun to read. I am buying the tiger, whale, and mouse books for my brother's new little boy. I thoroughly recommend this book!

Big Flap Foot Stomping Fun
This interactive children's book is great fun! It encourages you and your child to "stamp your feet," "smile," "whisper," "laugh," or "shout out boo," depending on who you find behind the flaps. The pictures are bright and attractive, featuring safari themes that include an elephant, giraffe, crocodile, kangaroo, and tiger. The flaps are big for little hands to pull back. Great fun for kids, and for the adults that witness the children's enthusiasm and even participate in the foot stomping themselves!

The Illustrated Tibetan Book of the Dead: A New Reference Manual for the Soul
Published in Paperback by Sterling Publishing (June, 2000)
Authors: Stephen Hodge and Martin Boord
Average review score:

A Fabulous Visual Journey
This abridged and simplified version of the ancient Tibetan masterpiece makes the text accessible to the general reader. The authors carefully include all that is of intrinsic value from the original without the difficult, more advanced teachings. Beautiful photographs of the people and country illustrate the text.

Beautifully Illustrated
A more accessible version for Westerners of the ancient Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, 'The Great Liberation Through Hearing'. The teaching takes you through each day of the bardo of death with a comprehensive commentary. For anyone with prior Buddhist understanding, the transition between life & death detailed in this book will not come as a shock. However, for those with no prior knowledge of Tibetan Buddhism it would probably be wise to start somewhere else like the 'Tibetan Book of Living & Dying' by Sogyal Rinpoche.

Do not be put off by thinking that this is a book just about dying. Although it is essentially a guide for the dead, it is also a guide for the living.

The Illustrated Tibetan Book of the Dead
Many people engaged in serious spiritual practice have suceeded in indefinitely putting off a "confrontation" with the Tibetan Book of the Dead. After all it is very complex, loaded with esoteric Tibetan Buddhist teachings, and the subject is so -- well, shall we say not a light entertainment accompanied by an immediate warm glow of satisfaction.

Now there is no reason to put it off any longer! The beautifully produced new Illustrated Tibetan Book of the Dead(a new translation with commentary) by Stephen Hodge with Martin Boord fills a void with great success.

First the book is physically beautiful with absolutely splendid color photographs of the Tibetan people, colorful religious celebrations and ceremonies and the awesome scenery of this spectacular country.

Reading, absorbing and responding to this book is very much like participating in a several day retreat. The retreat is conducted by someone who really understands his topic. The text of the book is reduced in size from the original, eliminating much of the more obscure material and examples, but the central, essential elements are all here.

Those central elements, very well introduced, are presented in a fine new translation and accompanied by very helpful explanatory material by Stephen Hodge. The first time visitor to this esoteric spiritual classic can therefore come away from a several day "retreat" of reading feeling well satisfied that the book has been opened for him/her and explicated by a master.

As our life is truly for the sake of dying into an eternity of awareness and bliss, and since we can in fact become familiar with the process of dying through meditative reading and understanding of this book -- and since a major point of the book is to show how easy it is to be so unfamilar with the open doors to eternal bliss that we can move right past them out of ignorance, why not stop now and take the time to study and learn the lesson of lessons.

Whether a reader of this book will wish to follow it up by going to a complete text of the Tibetan Book of the Dead is of course an individual decision based on how satisfied one is with the book discussed here. Certainly, this superlatively planned, written and produced book is l00% more helpful and satisfying than never bothering with the Book Of The Dead at all. And it is probably equal to the task of satisfying most readers completely.

Invaluable information
After losing my mother in April, I realized just how much more difficult it would have been had I not had this book. She spelled out everything I needed to know to fullfill her wishes and to make the process easier for me. EVERYONE, no matter the age, should have their own copy to assist their family once they are gone. It's a peaceful feeling knowing you've taken care of your family member exactly the way they would have liked.

In the Checklist of Life: A Working Book to Help You Live &
I found this book on my Daddy's desk last week when he died. Without it we would have been utterly LOST. I came up here to Amazon to purchase this book for my desk - it was indispensible, and once again my GOOD Father has shown me the RIGHT way to help loved ones. C.

Every home should have one!!!
"In the Checklist of Life" was a book that I found to be indispensible. In retrospect, after losing someone close to you, you realize how important this book really is. I have always joked with my family about writing my own obituary, and here is my very own chapter in which to do just that. The chapter about your pets is one that should not be missed for all pet lovers. This book is smart, it's funny, it makes you think, it makes you cry. Be kind to your family and fill in the pages of this wonderful book. They will forever be thankful.

Incomparable World
Published in Hardcover by George Braziller (August, 1998)
Author: S. I. Martin
Average review score:

A gripping and original novel
I greatly enjoyed "Incomparable World", with its vivid picture of eighteenth-century London. I won't soon forget its accurate and frightening description of the casual daily violence in its streets, and its equally accurate description of the many cultures that lived together.

Fantastic Look at Life of Free Blacks in 18th Century U.K.
My wife and I love going to London each year. But as an African American, I had always been perplexed by my fascination with, and attraction to, this place. After all, my family is from the Tidewater area of southeastern Virginia, where black slaves first landed in 1619. What affinity then could I possibly have with a country that held the greatest market share in trafficking of the souls and flesh of my African ancestors?

S. I. Martin's Incomparable World has put it all in perspective. I was at the same time skeptical and intrigued when the first chapter began with black people kicking back in a pub in London in 1786. I then became rivited and entirely engrossed in the book when the characters recounted their experiences as soldiers in the British army during the Revolutionary War - running across the corn fields of the plantations where my ancestors lived.

I then realized the bond we African Americans share with our Londoner brothers and sisters thanks to S. I. Martin! The ensuing chapters then beautifully entwine your mind with a great story and adventure, and is truly enjoyable.

My thanks to my friend Gary Lee at The Washington Post who gave me a copy of the book and who has met the author.

As stunning achievement, beautifully written
Author S.I. Martin mines a vein that has been largely ignored: black slaves in America who fought for the king in exchange for freedom and transport to Jamaica, Nova Scotia and England. Set in regency London, this story paints a vivid and moving picture of life among the destitute and, ergo, the desperate during this era. It is a powerful, evocative story of the resilience of the human spirit among violence and suffering so great yet so routine that nothing shocks. A wonderful book from a hugely talented new author.

Innovation/Imagination: 50 Years of Polaroid Photography

Great images by some of the greatest photographers alive
This book publishes the works of an exhibit held to celebrate the first 50 years of Polaroid photography. The works are from the Polaroid Collection that was started by Edwin Land to involve professional photographers in the development of his technology. Eventually this collaboration developed into a formal collection. This book gives us a wonderful glimpse of the great works that have been created using this medium. The photographs are arranged by decade which allows the reader to see the development in technique and technology. Each picture is accompanied by the name of the photographer, their country, the title of the work, the date, and the type of film used. The only thing I felt was missing was a some description of the works by either the photographers or the editors.

Wonderful presentation of an old favorite
This book is a beautiful addition to any art book collection. It is great to see all the things that have been done with polaroid, and has inspired me to do more with it. From polaroid transfers to Hockney.

Everybody Loves Polaroid ("Stuff" honoring a book)

Jenny Lives With Eric and Martin

Authors: Susanne Bosche and Andreas Hansen
Average review score:

An excellent way to introduce children Gay relationships
I live in the heart of the gay community in Brighton, and although I am not gay myself, I interact with the community on a regular basis. I found this wonderful book in a thrift shop, as I wanted my 6-year-old nephew to understand that the world is made up many different people but I didn't want to confuse him too much. This book is great and its fun to read as well. It tells the story of a little girl called Jenny and her two fathers. They live in Denmark, have regular contact with Jenny's mother who helps Jenny and her father Martin prepare a surprise birthday party for Eric. The story follows Jenny's life with her two fathers, and how various family disputes are sorted out such as Jenny not wanting to go to the launderette and a quarrel between her two fathers. It also gently points out that not all people are accepted in society but does it in such a way that children will not be upset. The book is filled with lovely black and white photos, and nice sized print that makes it easy for children to read or for an adult to read to younger children. It is a great book and it is a shame it is out of print. Well worth getting as it stands on its own as nice children's book that is both enjoyable and fun.

Why is this book out of print?
I have to say that I'm disappointed that this book is out of print. It was my favorite book when I was younger. Being a little girl with two gay dads myself, I really related to Jenny, who had blonde hair just like I did. Since there weren't any other books back then with families that looked like mine, I dragged this one practically everywhere I went. My copy is very old and tattered. I wish this book were available today, especially considering how few books there are that portray gay and lesbian families positively.

Children's Book Explores Two Dad Families and Homophobia
JENNY LIVES WITH ERIC AND MARTIN by Bosche, was one of the first children's picture books to be published which included gay characters. It is the story of a weekend spent by Jenny, her father and her father's partner, Eric. On Friday Jenny and her dad throw a surprise birthday party for Eric. They invite Jenny's mum, who often comes over to visit her and her two fathers. On Saturday morning Jenny looks through a book and has breakfast in bed with her fathers and then they go out into the garden. On Sunday they all clean the house and do the laundry. While both men are pulling Jenny back home in a cart, they run into a woman who wishes that gays would "...stay at home so the rest of us don't have to see you. Ugh!" Jenny is bothered and confused by the woman's comments. Eric explains that being gay is when two men love and live with each other. He goes on to explain the woman's behavior by saying that when people don't understand something or are told it is wrong, they get scared and angry. Using chalk to illustrate, he tells Jenny a story about a woman who disapproves of homosexual love until it is explained to her by her husband, who once loved another man. As Jenny is getting ready for bed she asks if her fathers can have babies. Eric explains that only men and women can have babies. The portrayal of Jenny's family will be familiar to children who live in a gay-headed household. Jenny's mother seems to have a role in the family that is unlike any of the other books which deal with this subject. There is a relationship between Jenny and her mother and between the mother and Eric and Martin. "Living nearby is Jenny's mum, Karen. She often comes to visit them." The original relationship between Martin and Karen is not made clear in the text. The black and white photos illustrate how the two men care for Jenny, each other, and their home in a variety of circumstances. The events that occur in the story (for example, holding the birthday party, doing the laundry, cleaning the house together, solving conflicts between parents) are familiar to all children and their families. Jenny's father's attempt to explain homophobia to her was simple, to the point, and successful. There are several issues about this book which must be addressed. One issue which can provoke powerful, almost visceral reactions from many adults is the photo of Jenny in bed with her two fathers, one of whom, though under blanket or pillow, appears to be in the nude. JENNY LIVES WITH ERIC AND MARTIN was authored in Sweden, translated in England and distributed in this country by Alyson Press. The difference in cultural practices and values may attribute to the seeming nonchalance in displaying such a photo in a children's book. The inclusion of this scene may make some adults uncomfortable, or for those individuals in families or cultures which are more open about their bodies, this book may be a nice addition to other story books about families. This frequently intense reaction is unfortunate because the book itself is one of the best in terms of the naturalness of being gay, being a parent and being a child who has gay parents. The books long length and detailed text make it more appropriate for children ages six and older.

The Jesus Meditations: A Guide for Comtemplation
Published in Paperback by Crossroad/Herder & Herder (March, 2002)
Authors: Michael Kennedy and Martin Sheen
Average review score:

Highly recommended as a profound and deeply faithful guide
The Jesus Meditations: A Guide For Contemplation by Michael Kennedy (Pastor, Dolores Mission Parish, East Los Angeles) is a unique book enhanced an accompanying audio CD narrated by Emmy Award-winning actor Martin Sheen. Simple black-and-white line drawings of Jesus administering to the needy appear in this contemplative book, divided into many meditations. Each brief section features a statement of grace for which the reader may strive, the setting and story of a given excerpt of scripture, the scripture itself, a poetic meditation, and an offering of reflective questions as to how one can better understand and improve oneself and one's soul. The Jesus Meditations are highly recommended as a profound and deeply faithful guide to offering worship and embracing Jesus Christ.

A one-of-a-kind book
The message of this book is simple. By focusing on the stories of the Gospels and trying to visualize the original location, people, sounds, and so forth, we can bring ourselves into the stories more fully. Then we can see how being right there with Jesus, as he heals, preaches, and proclaims the Good News, changes our hearts and gives us a different way to relate to Him.

This book is not the first to use this kind of visualization (which was also used by early Christians and elaborated by Ignatius Loyola), but it is the best. The author understands that visualization isn't about scholastic theology and persuasion -- it involves bringing Jesus into our hearts and being aware of -- and grateful for -- the transformation that occurs. For this reason, the appearance of actor Martin Sheen is a stroke of genius. There's a reason Sheen is always cast as the adviser, wise man, or (as in the West Wing) President of the U.S.A. -- his voice is soothing and easy to relax to, but is never gooey. He manages to convey intensity and relaxation at the same time. So on the CD accompanying the book, Sheen reads the imaginative portions, interspersed with Gospel readings and light (very unobtrusive) guitar in the background.

The publisher is promoting the CD as a great one to use during a busy day -- pop it into your car while stuck in traffic and so forth. But why sell yourself short? Go all out with this book. Take an afternoon off, by yourself or with friends who are also open to the experience. Sit silently for a little while to clear your mind of anxieties, then go through one or two of the meditations, using the CD, and take several minutes afterwards to let the experience sink in. Once you finish, you might want to have everyone write down a few thoughts that come to mind about the experience -- what did they notice about the Gospel story they had never noticed before? How does the story speak to them in ways they didn't expect?

However you use this book, you'll appreciate and cherish it.

A must have book!!!...
Where do we find true happiness? This is probably one of the most debated questions in our lives. Father Michael Kennedy gives us in his new book, "The Jesus Meditations" a simple guide to find the answer to this fundamental question. Through this meditation book Father Kennedy introduces us a person that has always known the response: Jesus. But he does not presents us a biblical Jesus, lost in events that occurred millenniums ago, rather Father Kennedy gives us a Jesus, that is alive and working in our neighbor, in the persecuted, in the insecure, in our own selves. This Jesus is found in the hardest place, the last place we dare to look for him. Father Michael's Jesus is found in the deepest place, that place where we hide our emotions, our true selves. You can find Him in the first contemplation and become his partner, his traveling mate in the journey through his most jovial times to his most trying days. If we find and we want to become his partner, he tells us that us that now that we know the answer, our problems do not disappear -as an act of magic. Instead Jesus discloses that we will be exposed to bigger and more trying problems, but now -that we have found a truly loyal friend- we can face them with a much better resolve.

The stories before each meditation describe this encounter with the real Jesus. The persons who share his or her story express, in a simple and concrete manner, how they were able to go down to that deep place and how this encounter has changed their lives. When reading this book be prepared to drift away from the text. You might find yourself smelling the rich oil that cured Sarah, gazing at the sun over the lake of Galilee, watching Jesus curing the lepers or even seen yourself helping him to heal others. Personally, I was deeply touched by the whole book, specially the meditation of a possessed man who, after talking with Jesus, is able to comprehend that his vices, his "demons" can be spelled out by recognizing them and facing them with his new friend.

The CD accompanying this book is an extra reward. Martin Sheen's voice and the melodic background music soothe whatever stress is caused by the bumper to bumper traffic of Los Angeles' freeways. On the balance this is a must have book.

Khaki Drill and Jungle Green: British Tropical Uniforms 1939-45 in Colour Photographs
Published in Hardcover by Crowood Pr (January, 2001)
Authors: Richard Ingram and Martin Brayley
Average review score:

Another Fine Photo Study of the WW II British Service.
This full color book has a broader scope than his WW II Tommy (c.f.) It covers the khaki drill and jungle green uniforms of the RAF and even the Naval ratings of the Malta Defense Force in white undress shorts.
This book is extremely well photographed in a large format. Because Brayley served 24 years as a military photographer in many parts of the world he was able to pose his models in the actual locations where the items were worn in Africa, the Middle East, and the Far East. As in all his work, all of the items are original World War period issue.
The only peculiar thing to my eyes is that because many items were unused, due to the British manner of attaching the clothing issue labels to the outside of the garments, these lables are visible in the images. In actual service, of course, these would be removed.
The book covers as well as clothing, personal equipment, small arms, and comfort items commonly carried in the field.
This is a fine work and a classic of its genre and deserves a place along with his other works on the library shelf.

Khaki Drill and Jungle Green
Oh, wow! A wonderful follow up to Tommy! An excellent and all encompassing review of British & Commonwealth uniforms worn in the warmer theatres of WW2. And at last someone has shown me that the P44 Equipment really did have an actual rucksack. Other writers, (Davis & Chappel), when describing this item, never show what it looked like, and as I have a P44 large pack that is nothing like what they describe, I doubted the existance of a rucksack. So my thanks to Messrs. Ingram & Brayley for illustrating it in use, and mounted on the P45 manpack carrier. The photos in the book are ecellent, the descriptions are clear and often amusing, and the subject matter extensive. To my mind it is the diffinitive work on British uniforms in the Middle and Far Easts. I only wait, with ill-concealed impatience, for September when the publishers promise the republication of the authors' first work on the uniforms of the British women's services; then my collections of books on British uniforms of WW2 will be complete

A SUPERB FOLLOW UP TO WW11 TOMMY
As the title suggests this work covers the uniforms worn by the British forces in tropical regions, personal kit and weapons are illustrated but the emphasis is on clothing of all types. Captions are necessariy brief but highly informative, space being devoted to quality photography rather than long text. If you enjoyed WW11 Tommy you will love this work that covers an untouched field.
